Cicerone - Walking the Shropshire Way
This guidebook describes a two-week circular trail around Shropshire in West Midlands of England. The 182 mile (290km) route is made up of two loops centred on Shrewsbury, visiting much of the country's best countryside. The southern loop takes in Stiperstones, Wenlock Edge and the Wrekin, while the northern loop visits Llanymynech, Ellesmere, Whixall and Wem. It can be split into separate southern and northern circular tours, or walked as a complete circuit using a link route between Haughmond to Shrewsbury, described in both directions.
The book also describes the Stretton Skyline Walk, a challenging 19½-mile (31.4km) itinerary taking in the Long Mynd, Ragleth Hill, the Hope Bowdler Hills, Caer Caradoc and the Lawley. This walk could be completed over two days, with Church Stretton providing an ideal breaking point to stop overnight.
Shropshire has been blessed with some of England's most serene rural beauty, from its distinctive red earth, sleek escarpments, rocky outcrops and verdant pastured ridges in the south and its wide plains and charming sleepy
villages in the north. Towns like Shrewsbury and Ludlow have a fascinating past, while UNESCO World Heritage Site Ironbridge Gorge is the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution.
A detailed route description is accompanied by 1:50,000 OS map extracts. There are sections on Shropshire history and geology, and useful planning tools including a facilities table and buses and trains journey planner.
