Beijing, which translates as "Northern Capital", but is occasionally romanized as Peking, is the capital and second most populous city (with more than 21.7 million inhabitants) after Shanghai (with 24.1 million inhabitants) of the Peoples Republic of China.

With regard to culture, education and politics, Beijing is considered the center of the PRC, whereas Shanghai and Hong Kong predominate in economic importance.
